Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet is closing in on move to Saudi Arabia after Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur opted against signing the France international on a permanent basis.

While the former Sevilla stopper might not have done enough to convince Tottenham to sign on a permanent basis this summer, Clement Lenglet will always have a place in the heart of some Spurs supporters.

The Barcelona loanee won over the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase with his determination and discipline in 2022/23. In a defence breached over 60 times last term, Lenglet was a rare bright spark; titanium amongst the tissue paper.

With a Tottenham side now under the stewardship of Ange Postecoglou pressing ahead with a deal to bring in Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg instead, however, Lenglet’s hopes of securing a permanent, £13 million move to the Premier League outfit have long since gone up in smoke.

And with the 28-year-old not part of Xavi’s plans at the Camp Nou either, all roads now lead to Saudi Arabia for a man who’s £145,000-a-week wages appears to have put pay to Lenglet’s chances of leaving Barca for another Europe-based club.

Lenglet, Mundo Deportivo reports, is now ‘finalising’ his move to the Middle East. The 2019 La Liga winner will link with up with Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane and former Manchester United defender Alex Telles at Al Nassr.

Tottenham, meanwhile, should fill a Lenglet-shaped hole in Postecoglou’s backline with one of the most promising, left-sided centre-halves in Europe. Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that a deal for Wolfsburg’s Van de Ven is finally edging closer after weeks of speculation.

Spurs are also expected to reach an agreement with Blackburn Rovers over the much-coveted England youth star Ashley Phillips.

“The chances are big that the boy will probably be going to a good side,” Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson told Lancs Live last week. “He is a great player. He will have a great future.”
