Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Wolfsburg defender Micky Van de Ven is in a state of limbo with reports suggesting that the Premier League outfit are no closer to a potential £30 million.
It is now over a fortnight since Fabrizio Romano reported that Tottenham Hotspur were ‘close’ to reaching an agreement with their Bundesliga counterparts over one of Ange Postecoglou’s leading central defensive targets.
You’d have been forgiven for assuming, then, that Tottenham would slam their foot onto the accelerator and get the deal done. Well, this is Daniel Levy’s Spurs we are talking about. Nothing, in this particular corner of the capital, is ever quite that simple.

Tottenham’s Micky Van de Ven deal in stais
More than two weeks after Romano suggested that a deal for Micky van de Ven was, if not imminent, than certainly close, The Athletic reports that progress has been negligible at best. Non-existent at worse.
In fact, the deal is, as things stand, understood to be not progressing at all. An agreement between Tottenham and Wolfsburg seems further away now than it did on July 10th. What’s more, there is a nagging feeling that – even if Spurs were to meet Wolfsburg’s £30 million asking price – Van de Ven would not be allowed to leave anyway.
It’s not as if Niko Kovac’s side are under any pressure to cash in, after all. The former FC Volendam youngster – who was spotted by now-Liverpool director Jorg Schmadtke and impressed at the recent U21 European Championships – is under contract until the summer of 2027 at the Volkswagen Arena.
It is a similar story regarding Tottenham’s pursuit of another left-footed, Bundesliga-based centre-half. Edmond Taposba also has a long-term contract, as Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes is at pains to point out.

“(We will not sell Tapsoba) under normal circumstances,” Rolfes tells BILD. “With his quality, I would be surprised if there is no interest. There are always limits somewhere. But Eddy is a very important player. Without a doubt one of the top players in our team.”
“Eddy still has a long contract. And therefore there is no reason for us to think about (selling him) at all. That’s not an issue.”
