Bruno Fernandes says Harry Maguire being stripped of the Manchester United captain’s armband ‘wasn’t the best’ for the Tottenham Hotspur transfer target.
On Sunday morning, Manchester United beat Arsenal 2-0 in a pre-season friendly in New York, with Bruno Fernandes opening the scoring whilst he donned the captain’s armband for the first time.
Even before Harry Maguire was removed as captain, there was a lot of talk about his future at Old Trafford, but this call by Erik ten Hag surely pushes him out of the door.
Well, whilst the England defender publicly addressed the situation when it happened, Fernandes has since shared that Maguire is ‘really happy’ for him, even though he is in such a ‘difficult’ situation, as Fabrizio Romano posted on Twitter.
As of this moment, it seems as though Maguire is staying put, even though a number of Premier League clubs have expressed interest in the 30-year-old, including Tottenham.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if this transfer story goes deep into the summer window, with Fernandes sharing his thoughts on Maguire’s situation.

“Harry congratulated me on the new captain election and he said he is really happy for me,” said Fernandes.
“I understand his position is not the best at the moment. It has to be difficult for him but he had a great moment with me.”
Maguire doesn’t suit Tottenham
As much as Man United fans want their £190k-a-week defender (Spotrac) out of the door, he needs to find a home that fits his profile before he can even think about making a move.
For some, his current situation of not playing and no longer being captain should send out the biggest of signals, but he can’t just join any old club.
Tottenham, for instance, are trying to rebuild under Ange Postecoglou, but Maguire wouldn’t suit what the former Celtic boss is going to attempt to do at Spurs because he wants to play a more aggressive and front-foot style of football.
That man whose football Maguire suited – Antonio Conte – has since been booted out, so the Englishman is late with that one.
