Ismaila Soro has reportedly performed U-turn on his potential move to Panathinaikos with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic stuck with the midfielder for the time being.

Nearly two months ago, Sky Sports provided a list of five players who would be allowed to leave Celtic this summer.

So far, however, only one of the aforementioned quintet has said their goodbyes; Vasilis Barkas having his contract terminated by mutual consent. But the lack of movement is hardly down to a lack of trying.

Celtic saw their hopes of a proposed deal to sell Albian Ajeti to Sturm Graz for £2 million collapse. A return to Aberdeen remains a possibility but nothing more at this stage for Liam Scales, while reported MLS interest in James McCarthy has grown cold.

As for Ismaila Soro, Portuguese publication Radio Renascenca reported on Wednesday that the former Arouca enforcer was ‘very close’ to joining Greek giants Panathinaikos.

Celtic want to sell Ismaila Soro

A £2 million signing from Israeli football back in January 2020; Soro has not turned out in green-and-white since a 3-0 Old Firm thrashing of Rangers 17 months ago.

Celtic’s hopes of getting Soro of the books appear to have gone up in smoke, however. Record, via NewsPao, now claim that the midfielder’s camp have decided against a new challenge in Greek football.

A blow, not only to Celtic but to Panathinaikos too.

The Super League runners-up need a replacement for talismanic captain Dimitrios Kourbelis. Kourbelis joined Trabzonspor this week despite reported interest from Rangers.

Celtic, meanwhile, are back to square one as they look to find a club willing to take Soro – not to mention a number of other forgotten men – off their hands.
