Craig Burley has warned Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United about signing Chelsea and USA forward Christian Pulisic who is ‘below Champions League level’.

The former Scotland international added that Christian Pulisic should leave Chelsea this summer and he previously felt that Newcastle United was a good destination for the speedster, as he told ESPN.

But he has changed his mind about the 24-year-old, who only played 812 minutes of Premier League football last term and only 1,200 minutes the season before.

Amid a clear-out at Stamford Bridge, Pulisic is one of the names that will be expected to head for the exit door.

Never mind this season, it hasn’t worked out for the USMNT international ever since his £58 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 (Sky Sports).

Pulisic should have left a while ago and those are words echoed by Burley, who thinks that he isn’t even good enough for Newcastle, anymore.

“I think most of us have thought that for quite a while (that Pulisic should move away),” said Burley. “I think his level is below Champions League.

“I could see him playing somewhere like, previously I thought Newcastle. One or two of the Italian clubs have a history of just coming in and taking players that haven’t been doing very well in the Premier League.”

Would Newcastle fans accept Pulisic?

Perhaps 12 months ago, the Toon Army faithful would have bitten your hand off for a player of Pulisic’s qualities, but not anymore.

They have taken their game to much higher levels now. They are in the Champions League and they are looking to sign those elite players, such as Nicolo Barella.

It also needs to be noted that Pulisic is injury-prone and that’s another issue that has hampered him and might prove to be off-putting to others.
