Nottingham Forest and Everton have been handed a second chance to sign Aster Vranckx with a Premier League move reportedly on the cards for the AC Milan misfit.

If we consider Milan’s impressive recruitment the driving force behind their Scudetto triumph last year, then it’s only fair to point out that it was also a major factor in their disappointing 2022/23 campaign.

Reminiscent, in some ways, of Leicester City’s ill-fated summer of 2016, the Rossoneri squandered the chance to improve upon their title-winning squad; Sergino Dest, Divock Origi, Charles de Ketelaere, Alessandro Florenzi and the aforementioned Aster Vranckx failing to make their mark under Stefano Pioli at San Siro.

Vranckx, a loan signing from Wolfsburg, started just two Serie A games.

Tuttomercatoweb, meanwhile, report that Milan have already decided not to trigger the £10 million option-to-buy clause in his contract; a number of Premier League clubs already waiting in the wings.

AC Milan will let Aster Vranckx go

Exactly which ones, TMW do not specify.

According to The Athletic, however, Everton and Nottingham Forest each showed an interest in the 20-year-old Belgium international before he moved to Milan. 12 months on, both clubs remain in the market for midfield reinforcements.

The mercurial, technical Vranckx – who idolises former Tottenham playmaker Moussa Dembele – would come cheaper than many of Everton’s other targets, the likes of Scott McTominay likely to be beyond the means of a Toffees side under pressure from Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Vranckx could also benefit from entering a midfield partnership with a player he will know well, fellow Belgian Amadou Onana.

“Vranckx has an enormous awareness. He’s a player with an enormous vision, especially at his age,” says Belgian football analyst Geert Heremans.

“He also has that great pass like (Atletico Madrid’s Axel) Witsel. He is more effective than Witsel.

“Aster Vranckx is very strong. That may be due to the boxing training with his brothers, because he is very strong on his feet. Vranckx never lacks commitment. He always gives 200 per cent, even during training and during the warm-ups.”
