Danny Mills says it doesn’t make sense for Leeds United to appoint Lee Bowyer as their next manager amid suggestions that Sam Allardyce is the ‘favourite’ to replace Javi Gracia.

With four Premier League games remaining, those in the Leeds United boardroom have hit the biggest panic button yet because Javi Gracia is set to be sacked, with the club staring at relegation to the Championship.

Sam Allardyce’s name has been thrown into the ring given his experience in this field, whilst Mills stated that it would be ‘incredibly difficult’ for his former teammate, Lee Bowyer, to take the gig, at this stage.

A former midfielder, who spent nearly a decade at Leeds United prior to their relegation to the Championship, Bowyer has managed two clubs during his career so far.

The 46-year-old started with Charlton Athletic, where he helped them earn promotion to the Championship, before his most-recent job was at Birmingham City.

It’s a different ball game taking the pressure cooker of a job in the Premier League, for a club the size of Leeds, in a relegation battle and with only a few weeks of the season remaining, with Mills sharing his thoughts, as he told Sky Sports News (02/05/23 at 8:55 am).

“Not really (makes sense for Leeds to go for Bowyer),” said Mills. “Maybe Lee long-term, if you are looking at next season or something like that.

“Again, if a manager comes in and you go down. Do you want to be tarnished with that, with only four games to go?

“Lee Bowyer is a good coach. Obviously, I played with him. I know his passion, his work rate and his work ethic. He has managed lower down the table and the leagues.

“I think it would be incredibly difficult for someone like Bo to come in and get them out of this difficult situation. Would he want relegation on his CV? The only reason he would take it is if he was guaranteed to have it next season, whether they are in the Premier League or not. But Sam Allardyce seems to be the favourite.”

LEEDS UNITED ARE IN A MESS

Whatever happens, the Yorkshire outfit are in a world of mess and those at the top have a lot to answer for.

With Gracia heading for the exit door, there are suggestions that Victor Orta is also fighting to save his job.

It shouldn’t be a surprise because they have played a huge part in Leeds being in this situation, which could now end up in them making a dreaded return to the Championship.
