Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy is convinced Harry Kane will not leave the London giants for Premier League rivals Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Earlier this month, chairman Daniel Levy floated the idea of a Kane-shaped trophy outside of Tottenham’s space-age stadium.

If England’s all-time record goalscorer upped sticks and headed for Stamford Bridge, however, his bronze bust would perhaps suffer the Zlatan Ibrahimovic treatment.

Tottenham’s dislike for Todd Boehly’s boys in blue is only rivalled, perhaps, by their animosity towards local neighbours Arsenal. The presence of Mauricio Pochettino – the most popular Spurs manager in generations – standing on the touchline in a Chelsea-themed blazer will be painful enough.

The sight of Harry Kane leading the line for Pochettino in West London, meanwhile, is pure, unfiltered nightmare fuel.

Will Harry Kane leave Tottenham Hotspur for Chelsea?

Kane’s contract expires in 2024. According to The Telegraph, there is currently ‘little chance’ of the striker signing an extension; his hopes of ending Tottenham’s long trophy drought dwindling by the season.

Manchester United are putting plans in place for a potential £100 million swoop. An elite-level striker right at the top of Erik ten Hag’s summer wishlist.

Murphy believes a move to Old Trafford may be on the cards. It is certainly more likely – he says – than Levy permitting his star man to join one of Tottenham’s most hated rivals.

“I can’t see it. I cannot see it. The Tottenham – Chelsea thing, its pretty big from my understanding,” Murphy, who spent the 2006/07 season at Spurs, tells talkSPORT (26 April, 11am).

“That would sever a few ties with certain Tottenham supporters. I am not convinced he would go to Chelsea, Harry Kane.

“This is somebody who is going to be a Tottenham legend. It is his legacy. Going to Man United is more accepted. I think that is the only option he’s got really.

“The statue would not be there then (if Kane joined Chelsea)!”

Kane has scored a superb 26 goals in all competitions this season. 24 of those coming in the Premier League. A tally even more remarkable when you consider just how poorly the majority of his Spurs team-mates have performed over the last eight months so.
