Newcastle are hoping to sign Manchester United’s Scotland hero Scott McTominay but a former Premier League winger believes West Ham ‘would be a good place to go’.
You’ve probably heard by now that McTominay started his career as a centre-forward rather than a central midfielder.
And, clearly, those goalscoring instincts have not left him; the Old Trafford academy graduate following up two goals off the bench against Cyprus with a far-more memorable brace at Hampden Park, McTominay’s Spain heroics securing the 26-year-old a place in Scottish football folklore.

With Manchester United looking to bring in a Harry Kane, a Victor Osimhen or a Goncalo Ramos over the summer, the chances of McTominay being reborn as an out-and-out number nine under Erik ten Hag look slim.
But there will have been plenty of Premier League bosses hurriedly making notes as McTominay put the 2010 World Cup champions to the sword.
Manchester United’s Scotland hero Scott McTominay is a Newcastle target
Eddie Howe, per The Telegraph, is a huge fan of the £40 million-rated McTominay. Former Arsenal, Liverpool and Portsmouth ace Jermaine Pennant, however, believes West Ham could do a lot worse if Declan Rice brings down the claret-and-blue curtain.
“I would say go for a Newcastle, maybe a West Ham,” Pennant tells talkSPORT (28 March, 10pm). “If Declan Rice leaves, I think that will be a great purchase. A great addition for West Ham. (McTominay and Rice) are a similar kind of players.
“If I was McTominay, West Ham would be a good place to go.”
The 26-year-old’s most recent outings at club level have come in a more defensively-minded midfield role, McTominay stepping in for the suspended Casemiro against Fulham in the FA Cup with rather underwhelming results.
If the international break has taught us anything, however, it’s that McTominay’s running power, athleticism and eye for goal could be utilised far more effectively in a more attack-minded position.
