Ryan Giles is shining on loan at Middlesbrough and the Northern Echo believe Wolves may decide against selling the assist-machine if they lose their Premier League status.

There remains a very real possibility that Boro and Wolves will be swapping divisions this summer; Michael Carrick’s side passing Julen Lopetegui’s on their way back to the big time.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, after two defeats in their last three Premier League games, are once again glancing nervously over their shoulders at the looming relegation zone. Middlesbrough, meanwhile, are third in the division below, and very well-placed to secure a play-off berth.

Giles, with his boundless energy and wonderful delivery, has been a massive part of their recent resurgence under Carrick. No one in the Championship has more than his seven assists thus far.

And, as you might imagine, Middlesbrough are ‘extremely keen’ to turn Giles’ loan deal into a permanent contract.

Does Middlesbrough loanee Ryan Giles have a future at Wolves?

“It’s an ongoing thing,” Carrick tells the Northern Echo. “Obviously, right now, there’s nothing more to report on it, but Ryan has been magnificent for us.

“He’s obviously caused a lot of problems going forward. But he’s also improved an awful lot on his defending.

“Of course, we’re constantly looking at what we need to improve and nail down now or in the summer. That’s just constant work that we’re trying to carry out.”

Wolves reportedly held talks with Middlesbrough in January, and the lines of dialogue remain open. The report does add, however, that Giles may only leave Molineux if Wolves avoid relegation. Meaning the Telford-born 23-year-old is likely to be viewed as a genuine first-team option if Lopetegui’s side descend into the second tier.

Giles’ excellent track record in the Championship certainly adds flesh to the bones of that argument. Since the start of 2021/22 – during loan spells at Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers and now Middlesbrough – the former England U20 international has set up no fewer than 17 goals for his grateful team-mates.

If Wolves do go down, and that is far from out of the question despite an impressive January overhaul, Giles is likely to take the place of Rayan Ait Nouri. The former Angers man is one of Wolves’ most sellable assets, and is in-and-out of the XI under Lopetegui.
