Ashley Williams has said that Vincent Kompany is better than Virgil van Dijk in his prime on the FIVE YouTube channel.
The legendary Man City captain and the Liverpool colossus are often compared for perhaps the third spot behind John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, who are widely considered as the two best centre-backs in Premier League history.
However, many believe that the ‘leader’ Virgil van Dijk is indeed the best defender to ever grace the Premier League, especially in his prime, above icons of the English game such as Vincent Kompany, unlike what Ashley Williams believes.
Ashley Williams says prime Vincent Kompany is better than prime Virgil van Dijk
The ‘amazing’ £220,000-a-week man is seen to have it all in his game, from being an incredible reader of the game, a physical specimen and an elite passer.
But Ashley Williams has said on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel that Vincent Kompany in his prime was better than Virgil van Dijk, saying, “I don’t know either two well enough, I only played against them. I think in that [Man] City team they had at that time, he was that sensible head but the aggressor as well, he was very organised, he was a good football player as well. I would pick him”

“It’s a hard one. But I can’t take nothing away from Van Dijk. If you were just asking me, I’d select Kompany over Van Dijk. They’re very similar, I think.”
Fair shout from Ashley Williams
Some may be incensed by the ex-Welsh international’s opinion, as the Dutch captain is especially praised for how ‘flawless’ he seemed in his prime.
But the same can be said for Vincent Kompany that is often associated with Virgil van Dijk in his prime, which is Ashley Williams’ point when comparing the two generational centre-halves.
