Newcastle United want to sign Leandro Trossard but Brighton and Hove Albion have triggered an extension to his contract.
90Min report that Brighton have taken up an option to extend Trossard’s contract by another year.
That means Trossard’s contract will now run until the summer of 2024, strengthening Brighton’s bargaining position.
However, a new long-term contract isn’t close to being agreed though and Trossard could end up leaving Brighton in the near future.
It’s stated that Newcastle are still interested in signing Trossard with Dan Ashworth keen on a reunion.
Magpies sporting director Ashworth oversaw Trossard signing for Brighton and may now want to repeat the trick with Newcastle.
Ashworth also fancies Brighton teammates Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister but Trossard is understood to be more likely to join.
Newcastle would make a bid for the Belgian this month if they think Brighton could sell and Trossard himself is allegedly considering his options.

Newcastle should beware Trossard price tag
Trossard is undoubtedly a good player; Rio Ferdinand has hailed him as ‘unreal’ and many would agree after this season.
The Belgian international scored a hat-trick at Anfield and has also scored against Manchester City and Chelsea.
Trossard has been making an impact against the so-called ‘big six’ and it’s understandable that a team trying to break into that mix would be keen in Newcastle.
Yet price will be the big factor here.
Brighton tend to sell high when teams come calling for their players and Newcastle need to be wary of paying too much.
Trossard is already 28 and may not be a long-term solution for Newcastle as they look to add another wide man.
Newcastle have proven that they will sign experienced Premier League players in Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Chris Wood.
The Magpies have also looked at younger wingers though, targeting deals for the likes of Moussa Diaby and Christian Pulisic.
Those younger wide men may fit the bill a little better for Newcastle, unless there is a bargain deal in the offing for Trossard.
