Ronald de Boer has backed Cody Gakpo in his decision to snub Manchester United in favour of a move to Liverpool.

Until very recently, Fabrizio Romano had reported that the 23-year-old was open to putting pen to paper for the Red Devils.

In fact, ESPN had made a claim that Erik ten Hag had expressed his frustration to Manchester United themselves as Cody Gakpo decided to join Liverpool.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s men ended up signing the Dutchman for a reasonable initial fee of £37 million, according to Romano.

With United needing a natural striker to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, it made sense why the club were keen on signing the 23-year-old.

After all, Gakpo became a household name while playing as a No.9 for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

Scoring 3 goals in 5 games, the former PSV talisman was one of the biggest surprises packages at the tournament.

But David Ornstein did emphasise that the prolific forward preferred a switch to Anfield over Old Trafford.

Ronald de Boer backs Cody Gakpo in decision to join Liverpool instead of Manchester United

Ronald de Boer agrees with Cody Gakpo for snubbing Manchester United in favour of a transfer to Liverpool.

“I think he [Gakpo] will only get better and from my point of view, he made the right choice”, he said on talkSPORT, as relayed by Metro.

The veteran is spot on about Gakpo’s decision

While Erik ten Hag seems to be the perfect man for the Manchester United job, his side are still miles away from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The Reds’ fall from grace makes it easy for many to forget their dominance alongside Man City over the past couple of years.

It seems as if Ronald de Boer and Cody Gakpo are cognizant of this very reality, which is why a move to Liverpool instead of Manchester United makes sense to the Dutch pair.
