As reported by ESPN’s Rob Dawson, Erik ten Hag has told Manchester United that he is frustrated about Cody Gakpo joining Liverpool instead in January.
On Boxing Day, Fabrizio Romano had claimed that Gakpo remained open to joining Ten Hag’s men, despite a summer move failing to get over the line.
Romano had even stated that the discussions between Manchester United and the 23-year-old’s agents had always been positive as well.
Keeping all these factors in mind as well as Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, it seemed as if the Dutchman, described as “dangerous” by Robin van Persie (via BT Sport) was destined for a move to Old Trafford.
However, PSV Eindhoven took to their official website to confirm that the Dutchman had signed for Liverpool seemingly out of the blue, sending both fans and pundits alike in a state of shock.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has stated that the Reds completed a deal to sign the World Cup star for £35 million.
Tellingly, it was also mentioned that while Man United and Chelsea were keen on the arrival of Gakpo, he decided to join Jurgen Klopp and Co.
Erik ten Hag tells Manchester United that he is frustrated about Cody Gakpo joining Liverpool

Erik ten Hag has informed Manchester United that he is frustrated by Cody Gakpo moving to Liverpool instead, according to ESPN’s Rob Dawson.
It is claimed that Ten Hag was not surprised that Gakpo chose to sign for the Merseyside-based club, as he shares the same agent as the player.
However, the 53-year-old remains “disappointed” that his fellow countryman favoured a switch to Liverpool.
Erik ten Hag’s loss is Jurgen Klopp’s gain
Ultimately, Jurgen Klopp is likely not to be too fussed about Manchester United tactician Erik ten Hag being gutted about Cody Gakpo heading to Liverpool.
Gakpo’s ability to operate as a left-winger as well as provide an option as a striker makes him exactly the kind of versatile forward that has shone under the German in recent year.
Coming off the back of a lively World Cup campaign, the PSV forward could well spark Liverpool’s mixed bag of a season into life.
