Gabby Agbonlahor says it’s ‘strange’ just how low the transfer fee for Cody Gakpo is following his move from PSV to Liverpool, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Aston Villa striker was surprised that, in footballing terms, how very little Jurgen Klopp’s side have paid for the 23-year-old.

According to the Guardian, the Reds, led by transfer guru Julian Ward, have paid £35 million for the Netherlands international, who shone at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, alongside Virgil van Dijk.

That’s Liverpool’s first piece of action ahead of the January transfer window opening on Sunday and fans will be hoping more late Christmas presents will arrive at their door.

Yes, the midfield is an area that needs sorting, but this Gakpo deal is a very good sign that the wantaway FSG owners are still helping Klopp out on the pitch.

But following the arrival of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz in 2022, the New Year will officially start with Gakpo’s arrival, as Agbonlahor shared his thoughts on the deal.

“Why is it so low though, the fee,” asked Agbonlahor. “It’s strange now to say that a £37 million is low. Are we missing something? You would think it would be more.

“I like watching him. I was watching him and I was like ‘he’s a big guy as well’. He’s strong at running with the ball. Aggressive. He can score a goal as well.

“When you look at Liverpool, they had to buy someone in January. I think the Liverpool ownership and management would have looked at the squad and thought. Nunez is a decent player, he needs a season to get into it and is a bit rusty in front of goal. But he will come good.

“Salah is Mr Reliable. But to have Jota and Diaz out injured, they might come back, but they might also get injured again, so who is your next one? Firmino has had injury problems.”

GAKPO’S LIVERPOOL DEBUT

The versatile forward has some time to settle in before he makes his debut for the club, which should come on Monday.

Given that Gakpo isn’t eligible to play until the New Year, he will miss his new side’s Friday night clash against Leicester City.

But on the 2nd of January, the Reds will travel to Griffin Park to lock horns with Brentford, where Klopp could unleash his new signing to the rest of the Premier League.
