Liverpool have completed the signing of Cody Gakpo and the Champions League’s Instagram page have posted a picture of Gakpo holding up the no.18 shirt – which has been liked by £60m-rated Liverpool target Moises Caicedo.

Gakpo, 23, joined Liverpool in a deal that is believed to cost an initial fee of less than £40million. It comes after the Netherlands star sparkled at the World Cup. He has 17 goals and 13 assists in just 24 outings for PSV this term.

It came out of the blue. Plenty of clubs were being linked with Gakpo, after he came close to joining Leeds and other Premier League clubs in the summer. But Liverpool swooped first, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz sidelined at Anfield.

In what is one of the first big moves by one of the Premier League’s top sides ahead of the January window, the transfer juices are flowing. Caicedo, meanwhile, is impressing in Brighton’s midfield, attracting interest of his own.

The Telegraph say Newcastle are considering a move, with Jonjo Shelvey injured. A fee north of £60m would be required. Meanwhile, Sky Sports say Chelsea and Liverpool are keen. Now, he has liked the post regarding Gakpo.

Is it an indication that Caicedo wants to join Liverpool? Well, it is hardly as if Caicedo has crossed paths with Gakpo, other than the World Cup clash between Ecuador and The Netherlands in the group stages. In which Gakpo scored.

It might be a hint from Caicedo that he is open to joining Liverpool ahead of the January window. Do Liverpool need him? Well, they need back-up for Fabinho – that is for sure. Arthur was brought in to do that but is out injured.

The chances are, he returns to Juventus after a disastrous loan spell. Would Caicedo be happy sitting on Liverpool’s bench as cover? That remains to be seen. But Liverpool have shown they are ready to spend, and spend big.
