Liverpool keeping tabs on ‘electric’ £42m talent lighting up the World Cup

Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on Athletic Club wonderkid and Spain international Nico Williams at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the Reds seemingly interested in signing the attacker.

According to CalcioMercato, the Merseyside giants are tracking the forward in Qatar following a breakout season with Bilbao in La Liga, with Williams just one of many youngsters called up by Luis Enrique for the World Cup in Qatar, where the forward has impressed.

The 20-year-old striker has featured off the bench in both of Spain’s fixtures so far this competition against Costa Rica and Germany, and Liverpool are now taking an interest in Williams as reports continue to mount over the Reds potentially signing the forward.

With a release clause of £42m, Liverpool signing Williams will be quite the challenge in January given how limited the Reds might be in the transfer window. However, this latest update could suggest that Jurgen Klopp is keen to make an early move for the Spanish international.

As we know, Liverpool are in transition following the departure of Sadio Mane in the summer and with the likes of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and even Thiago Alcantara reaching the twilight of their careers, and a squad refresh by signing young prospects could be a good way forward for the Reds.

Indeed, whilst the attack is stacked with exciting players, no name can come as close to the potential Williams possesses, with Total Football Analysis labelling the youngster as ‘electric’ based off the attacker’s incredible performances for Bilbao this season.

Liverpool are no strangers to signing young talents ahead of the curve, with Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvahlo regulars for Klopp’s side this season with Calvin Ramsay likely to follow in the coming months. Which is why adding Williams to the mix would be an exciting inclusion for the Reds.

Indeed, the Spanish international has shown this World Cup that he has a big future ahead of him. And with Williams’ stock only to increase from here, Liverpool could once again beat everyone to the punch and sign the versatile attacker in the January window.
