Football Scotland report that Rangers have been scouting Bristol City attacker Antoine Semenyo, with the attacker currently at the World Cup with Ghana – but his presence in Qatar could potentially hamper Rangers’ chances.

Semenyo, 22, has been in fine form for Bristol City since he joined the club back in 2018. Breaking into the Robins side, he has clocked up 116 appearances in all competitions – having a hand in 38 goals. This season, he has four.

Sports World Ghana reported earlier this month that Semenyo was expected to be the subject of a £5million bid from Rangers. Transfer plans are likely to have been shelved, after the Ibrox club sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Whether Semenyo remains a target, following van Bronckhorst’s exit, remains to be seen. But Ross Wilson is still in place and it is claimed that Rangers have been scouting him for a number of months. Celtic have also been in talks.

Rangers have been scouting Semenyo, Qatar presence could affect move

Semenyo would be a wonderful signing for Rangers. Not least, because some of their summer signings have failed. Tom Lawrence is expected to be sidelined for the best part of four months. Rabbi Matondo has been inconsistent.

Antonio Colak has been good. But both Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are out of contract at the end of the season. Fashion Sakala has also been linked with the exit door and Kemar Roofe remains a regular in the treatment room.

So, Rangers need an attacker and Semenyo makes sense. The Ghana star made his fifth cap for his country on Thursday, coming off the bench during a 3-2 defeat to Portugal at the World Cup. His deal also ends in June 2023.

However, Bristol City have the option of a further 12 months to extend Semenyo’s stay at Ashton Gate. Whether they decide to exercise that option remains to be seen. Or, they may prefer to cash in come the January window.
