Journalist Graeme Bailey has told TEAMtalk why Bournemouth chose not to appoint Marcelo Bielsa as their head coach.
It was revealed by the Athletic that the Cherries were interested in hiring the former Leeds United manager.

Even Fabrizio Romano had told the House of Champions podcast that the Argentine taking over the helm at the Vitality Stadium was a “real possibility.”
With a report by the Athletic even stating that the 67-year-old had told his friends that he was keen on taking a job in England after getting sacked by Leeds, it seemed as if a move to Bournemouth was imminent.
However, it was reported by the Athletic that they had decided to offer Gary O’Neil the permanent job, after the wonders he has done since being tasked with being on the sidelines.
Why did Bournemouth not hire Bielsa?
Graeme Bailey has told TEAMtalk why Bournemouth rejected the golden opportunity of bringing in a manager described by Pep Guardiola as a “genius” (via France 24)
“The only boss they [Bournemouth] approached was Marcelo Bielsa”, he said.
“They were intrigued by [Marcelo] Bielsa, but bringing him in is not a cheap process. He has a big backroom staff and althought was also keen, no doubt it was a big risk.”
“In the end, Gary O’Neil just showed too much for them not to go for him.”
The Cherries may live to regret their decision
As heartwarming it is from Bournemouth not to have hired Marcelo Bielsa due to Gary O’Neil’s brilliance since being in charge, it is key to remember the the former’s exploits in the game.
The veteran’s spell at Leeds exemplified that he can not only get results, but play a brand of football that can challenge the best in the business.
Both, in terms of watchability and competitiveness.
However, one hopes Gary O’Neil makes a positive impact at the Cherries, as the job he has done so far has been terrific.
