Kris Boyd names just six players who are ‘good enough’ to stay at Rangers

Ibrox legend Kris Boyd believes there are only six members of the current Rangers squad who should be safe from the chop as the Glasgow giants look for a new manager to replace the sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst, speaking to the Scottish Sun. 

While Van Bronckhorst must obviously take his share of the blame, given his P45 on Monday after falling nine points behind Celtic in the Premiership table and bearing the scares of a disastrous Champions League campaign, the Dutchman certainly wasn’t dealt an easy hand. 

Rangers, for some time now, have looked like a team ripe for some high-quality reinforcement. But while Old Firm rivals Celtic have succeeded in knocking down one old kingdom and building a new one in it’s place, Rangers feel a side trying to build their house on sand. 

So many of their signings in recent transfer windows have failed to make the grade. While others – such as the long-serving Steven Davis, Kemar Roofe and Borna Barisic – have become victims of Father Time. 

As such, Boyd believes that, if a root-and-branch overhaul is to take place at Ibrox, you could almost count the players safe from the axe on one hand.

“You could set your stall by James Tavernier, John Lundstram, Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence and Ryan Kent, if he decides to stay,” Boyd says. “The rest — some through age and others who are not good enough — will be cast aside.” 

That, of course, includes the likes of Davis, Allan McGregor, Ryan Jack, Filip Helander and Scott Arfield; all of whom will be out of contract in less than 12 months’ time. Plus hit-and-miss additions like Malik Tilman, Fashion Sakala and Rabbi Matondo. 

Alfredo Morelos is another who’s future is likely to come under question in the post-Van Bronckhorst era. With just three goals in 19 games all season, is it time ‘El Bufalo’ was sent to market?

“Morelos has been getting away with too much for too long now. His behaviour has a serious knock-on effect for the others in the team,” Boyd adds. “That can fester within a group and resentment builds.

“You can tell that is the case by the reaction of his team-mates in Paisley two weeks ago. His performance against St Mirren (during a 1-1 draw) was one of the worst I have ever seen in a Rangers jersey.

“And those beside him in the dressing room knew it.”
