Kevin Muscat ‘could do a great job at Rangers’ if he was to take over from Giovanni van Bronckhorst at the Scottish Premiership giants, former Australia team-mate Steve Corica says in quotes reported by the Daily Record.
According to The Athletic, Van Bronckhorst’s job is under no immediate threat. That is despite a dismal Champions League campaign (Rangers making history on the continent for all the wrong reasons), and the fact they head into the World Cup break nine points behind Glasgow rivals Celtic.
Patience may be a virtue, as far as the Rangers bosses are concerned. But disappointing results, coupled with underwhelming performances, are only increasing speculation surrounding Van Bronckhorst’s future.

Maccabi Haifa coach Barak Bakhar describes links with the Ibrox giants as ‘flattering’. Kjetil Knutsen, who put Bodo/Glimt on the map, has also been quizzed about a potential move to Scotland’s second city recently.
Muscat, a former Rangers defender, is the newest name to be discussed. Interestingly, Muscat picked up where a certain Ange Postecoglou left off at Japanese outfit Yokohama F Marinos; adding the 2022 J-League title to two Australian league medals he secured as head coach of Melbourne Victory.
Could Kevin Muscat take over from Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Rangers?
“Why not?” former Socceroo team-mate Corica says when quizzed about the prospect of Muscat following in Postecoglou’s footsteps in Glasgow.
“Kevin obviously took over Yokohama after Ange. He had a lot of turnaround of players and stuff like that. But he went on and won the league this season. So I’m sure Kevin could do a great job at Rangers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kevin’s being linked with the job.
“Kevin’s very capable, he’s a very good coach. And I know he’s very thorough in what he does. Wherever he’s gone he’s won trophies. So, I have no doubt he would do a great job at Rangers.”
Muscat, formerly of Crystal Palace, Wolves and Milwall, won the domestic treble during his one and only season as a player at Rangers, in 2002/03. Now 49, Muscat is one of the most impressive young coaches outside of European soil, adding to his collection of silverware since taking up a role in the dugout.
“Of course, Kevin would take on Ange. He’s very competitive, Kevin,” adds Sydney FC coach Corica. “He’s a fiery character and yes, obviously, very good at his job. I’m sure, one day, he probably will end up at Rangers.”
