Manchester United are reportedly intent on signing Benfica star Enzo Fernandez in January, with Liverpool also in the race for the midfielder.
According to Record, Erik Ten Hag is ‘crazy’ about bringing the 21-year-old to Old Trafford in the winter window, with Fernandez one of the breakout stars of the season following his move to Benfica in the summer from his native Argentina.
The Portuguese giants have enjoyed an unbeaten season that has already seen Benfica top their UEFA Champions League group ahead of the likes of PSG and Juventus. With Fernandez’s arrival playing a major role in the Lisbon giants’ historic start to the 22/23 campaign.
As a result, though, Fernandez is now being tracked by many top clubs from across Europe, the majority of which come from the Premier League, with Liverpool one of said sides in the running for the former River Plate superstar as reported by Sport.

Valued at £53m according to a recent study by the CIES Football Observatory, Fernandez has already been hailed by coach Jose Peseiro as a ‘genius’ for his style of play and incredible impact in Europe with Benfica. And a move to England now feels likely with this latest update.
Indeed, United are fully backing Ten Hag with the Dutch coach spending close to £250m in the summer. And whilst Liverpool might be an ideal next step for Fernandez, the Red Devils might just win the race given their need for a new midfielder.
Manchester United signing Fernandez will sting for Liverpool

Fernandez has arguably been the breakout midfielder in Europe this season. With the Argentine international already establishing himself as a talent for the future and one of the most desirable players in Portugal. And United signing the younger will no doubt sting for Liverpool.
After all, the Reds are desperate to sign a top-class midfielder to build for the future. And whilst Fernandez might not be Liverpool’s first-choice, the South American would be quite the addition for the Anfield side in January.
