Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are looking into bringing former Leicester City and Manchester United goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler back to the Premier League from Bundesliga.2 outfit Hannover, according to German publication BILD.
Last week, reports emerged suggesting that the men from Merseyside were eyeing up a shock swoop for SV Sandhausen’s 29-year-old shot-stopper Patrick Drewes. It seems that he is not the only second-tier glovesman on Klopp’s radar, either.
Though Zieler is admittedly a more recognisable name than Drewes. The latter was, after all, plying his trade for Würzburger Kickers as recently as 2019.
Zieler, now 33, has six caps for the German national team. He was part of Joachim Low’s World Cup-winning squad too.
What’s more, Zieler also has two spells in English football under his belt. Two admittedly rather forgettable spells, it must be said. He did not make a single first-team appearance at Man United.
Could Liverpool bring Ron-Robert Zieler back to England?
Zieler, coming off a spell at Cologne, is unlikely to find regular minutes easy to come by at Anfield either.
Liverpool appear to be on the lookout for a new third-choice ‘keeper with Adrian’s contract expiring in 2023. Zieler would fit the bill; an experienced and high-quality replacement should Klopp lose both Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher to injury or suspension.
Per BILD, Zieler also appeals to Liverpool because he can be registered as a ‘homegrown player’ in the Premier League, having honed his talents as a teenager down the road in Manchester. He will also be available for a bargain fee in January with his contract running down.
Hannover, however, can extend his current deal by a further 12 months should they decide to do so.
“I haven’t heard anything about it,” sporting director Marcus Mann says when quizzed on those Liverpool links.
