Jermaine Jenas claimed during commentary on BT Sport that if he was to pick a Sporting Lisbon player to take to Tottenham, it would be right-back Pedro Porro. That is despite Marcus Edwards scoring, and links to Manuel Ugarte.

Tottenham came within an inch of Champions League qualification on Wednesday night. Perhaps, smaller than an inch. With the score at 1-1, Harry Kane’s right knee was adjudged offside as the England skipper slammed home a winner.

A VAR check that sparked controversy. Antonio Conte was sent off, and could now be suspended for the last group game against Marseille in France. It leaves Group D in the balance, with all four clubs still able to qualify.

Jenas was impressed by Sporting. The Portuguese champions, managed by highly-rated Ruben Amorim, dominated the first half. Edwards scored, against his old side. Glenn Hoddle says he would cost a lot of money to buy him back.

Meanwhile, Portuguese newspaper Record say Tottenham are looking at Manuel Ugarte. The Sporting midfielder was hard-working, picking up a yellow for a tackle on Bryan Gil. But Jenas says he would take right-back Porro at Spurs.

“There’s a lot of talented players in the team, but if there was one I could take from this team it would be Porro. He is different class,” Jenas said on commentary with BT Sport, when told Tottenham are considering a move for Ugarte.

There is no doubt that Porro would be a wonderful signing for Tottenham. He proved as much, especially in the first half. His crossing into the box was sensational, constantly proving to be a threat to Tottenham’s back three.

Of course, Spurs could do with a right-back. They signed Djed Spence in the summer, but he has only managed two outings for Spurs. Matt Doherty has been inconsistent – with injury playing a part. Emerson Royal has struggled.

So, a right-back is needed and Porro – judging on Wednesday’s showing – would be an improvement. A player that Sporting bought from Manchester City for just £7million, after a loan. In 84 games, he has 22 goal involvements.
