After rebuilding his reputation to some extent during a loan spell at CSKA Moscow last season, putting those injury problems behind him with 11 starts in 12 Russian Premier League games, Jean-Philippe Gbamin might have thought that a fresh start would be coming his way at Goodison Park over the summer.
That, however, was not to be the case.
With Everton opting to bring Idrissa Gana Gueye back to Merseyside while spending £35 million on Amadou Onana, Gbamin found himself heading out on loan for a second time in a matter of months on August 27th.

And with Gueye and Onana already striking up a promising partnership in the heart of the midfield, few at Everton will be questioning the logic of that decision right now. But with Gbamin picking up where he left off in Moscow since joining Trabzonspor on another short-term deal, Everton’s forgotten £25 million man is doing everything he can to catch Frank Lampard’s eye.
Everton loanee Jean-Philippe Gbamin shines in the Europa League
“We feel great,” the 27-year-old beamed after playing a starring role in Trabzonspor’s 4-0 Europa League thrashing of Monaco on Thursday night (Sporx).
He made 65 touches, completed two key passes and three clearances. A real all-round, all-action central midfield display against one of the best teams in France (WhoScored).
“We deserve to be out of the group (and in the knockout stages),” the 27-year-old adds. “And we showed this with the football we played.”
Gbamin has been in and out of the Trabzonspor team since arriving at the Turkish Super Lig champions nearly two months ago. But, if he wants to make himself undroppable at the Senol Gunes Stadium Veteran, more performances like this would certainly go a long way.
“The Everton loanee was sublime throughout,” Get France Football News wrote in their match report, Trabzonspor overtaking Monaco into second-place in Group H.
“(Gbamin) brought a serenity to Trabzonspor’s game; even at the beginning of the match when his side were struggling to maintain possession. He won all of his duels, both ground and aerial. And he was a progressive passer who became increasingly influential as Trabzonspor grew into the game.”
Gbamin grew into the game on Thursday. He’s growing into Trabzonspor’s season too.
