Newcastle United have reportedly made contact with Marco Asensio’s representatives, with the Magpies interested in signing the Real Madrid superstar in 2023.

According to Marco Deportivo, the Premier League side have stepped up their interest to sign the Spanish international, with Asensio’s contract with Madrid set to expire next summer as clubs from across Europe increase their efforts to land the 26-year-old.

FC Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Asensio along with Liverpool and Arsenal. Yet Newcastle look to have made a significant move in their hopes of bringing the superstar winger to St. James Park next year in what could be one of the biggest deals of 2023.

With a reported release clause of €700m (£626m), signing Asensio for free would be quite the steal for Newcastle, especially with the Toon more than capable of matching the attacker’s current wages at Madrid, yet competition from UEFA Champions League sides could prove to be a problem for Eddie Howe.

Indeed, Asensio has been a European champion with Madrid three times in his career, and signing for a club who have not qualified for the competition this century could be quite a hard sell for Newcastle regardless of how much money they can throw at the Mallorca-born winger.

Interest will be high in Asensio as we approach the January transfer window, and whilst Newcastle’s odds remain low in signing the Spanish international, making a move now for the Madrid star is quite a bold and smart decision from the Premier League side.

Newcastle are easily the richest football club in the world after their PIF takeover last year, yet despite this huge financial backing the Magpies now have, the team’s new owners are yet to flex their muscles in the transfer market in a big way, yet Asensio could prove to be that world-class, superstar signing fans have been expecting for 12 months.

After all, Asensio is one of the biggest names in the current Madrid star, and at 26, the winger is hitting the prime of his career. And signing for Newcastle could be a unique challenge for a player who has already achieved practically everything there is to win at club level.
