According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could now beat Arsenal and Newcastle to the signing of Marco Asensio.

What’s the story?

Well, the Spain international – who has a release clause worth £592.5m at Real Madrid – looks set to leave the Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer in July with his contract expiring.

Asensio recently expressed his frustration at a lack of game time under Carlo Ancelotti in front of thousands, throwing his training gear in anger as he was left on the bench while Real Madrid were being held by Mallorca.

The 26-year-old has only been given 12 minutes of action in La Liga this season, and now, Barcelona could offer him a shock escape from his nightmare in Madrid.

Mundo Deportivo believe the Catalans have developed a strong relationship with Jorge Mendes – who represents Asensio – and there is belief that a deal can be done when the attacker becomes a free agent in the summer.

The Spanish news outlet add that Arsenal, Newcastle and AC Milan all attempted to sign the Spaniard during the summer transfer window, although his contract situation complicated proceedings.

Now, however, it seems very likely that Asensio will be leaving Real Madrid in 2023.

Arsenal or Newcastle could still beat Barcelona to Asensio

In our view, the bitter rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid could benefit Arsenal or Newcastle.

January represents Real Madrid’s last opportunity to recoup some money for Asensio, while it would also be their last chance to have a say in his destination – presumably, Ancelotti doesn’t want Xavi to obtain the player.

Therefore, Real Madrid could look more favourably upon an offer from the Premier League in January, as they would surely do anything to avoid strengthening their rivals.

Furthermore, Asensio himself may prefer a move to England.

After all, the last player to directly move between both sides – Luis Figo in 2000 – had a pig’s head thrown at him by Barcelona fans while taking a corner during El Clasico.

Keep an eye on this situation, as Mikel Arteta and Eddie Howe have a good chance of signing Asensio.
