During the summer of 2020, former Spain international Juanma Lopez was asked to name up two future stars he felt could go far in the European game. One was Dani Olmo, the RB Leipzig playmaker now following in Lopez’s footsteps for the Spanish national team. The other well, is not quite so well-established two years on.
Well, not yet anyway.
“I know him well,” Lopez told Gianluca di Marzio. “(Majer) is an extraordinary talent who can go very far. His growth is constant. He will become one of the best in Europe in his position, you will see.”

When Lopez is done with life as an agent, perhaps a future exists for him in scouting. Because, while Dani Olmo is almost-certain to be included in Spain’s World Cup squad should he return from injury, Lovro Majer is a name you are going to hear a lot more regularly in 2023.
Could Lovro Majer soon join Barcelona, Atletico Madrid or PSG?
Per FootMercato, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain both enquired about the so-called ‘new Luka Modric’ over the summer. Atletico Madrid too. And the 2021 La Liga champions have no intention of dropping their interest in a player who shares Modric’s class, guile, and defence-splitting capabilities, while adding a real ruthless streak to his name.
Majer produced 11 goals and 13 assists for his current employers, Rennes, in 2021/22. It would now take an offer in the region of £50 million to convince Rennes to cash in. That’s quite the profit margin, when you consider Majer joined for £10 million from Dinamo Zagreb just last year.
Leeds United were reportedly keeping an eye of Majer before he swapped the Croatian capital for Roahzon Park. Celtic, meanwhile, were well ahead of the curve, sending scouts to watch a teenage-Majer all the way back in 2018, when he was valued at just £1.5 million by Hajduk Split.
He’s come a long way since then.
“At the moment, everything is fine,” Majer told SoFoot a couple of months ago. “I think I’m in a good place. But I know that I can also still improve in several areas. For example, I know that I still have to improve my heading game, even though I have scored three headed goals this season.
“I know that several things are written about my future. But I am happy in Rennes.”
Imagine how much happier Majer could be, however, in Madrid, Barcelona or Paris, with silverware and Champions League football to show for his talents.
