According to Marca, Liverpool and Chelsea are now on red alert following a fresh development involving Kylian Mbappe at PSG.

What’s the story?

Well, the France international signed a new three-year contract back in May, putting an end to intense speculation surrounding a move to Real Madrid.

However, Liverpool and Chelsea – as well as Manchester United – have been alerted to the fact that Mbappe is only tied to PSG for another two years, with the third year now revealed to be optional for the striker.

According to L’Equipe, the 23-year-old could leave for nothing in 2024, as it is far from guaranteed that he will exercise the option to stay at the Parc des Princes for an additional 12 months.

Jürgen Klopp has already admitted that he would love to have Mbappe at Anfield, and interestingly, the PSG No.7 is rumoured to be interested in playing under the German at some point during his career.

The £413,000-a-week superstar has continued his unerring form in front of goal this season with ten strikes in eight games.

It comes after Mbappe enjoyed a simply remarkable 2021/22 campaign, in which he scored 39 goals and provided 26 assists in 46 appearances.

Liverpool & Chelsea must stay alert

The opportunity to sign a player like Mbappe does not come around very often – as a result, if he does decide against triggering the extra year in his contract, Liverpool and Chelsea need to be the first clubs to know.

In our view, the Premier League duo can not afford to miss out on any information regarding the Frenchman between now and 2024, or else they risk allowing Real Madrid or Manchester United to leapfrog them in the transfer battle.

It is also a matter of timing. If Liverpool and Chelsea find themselves outside of the Champions League when Mbappe does become available, there will have no chance of convincing him to take a step down.

It is certainly a delicate situation, although in many ways, it should come as a nice surprise to know that a player of this quality may now be available in 2024, when it looks as if he would be staying in Paris until at least 2025.
