Thierry Henry has expressed his surprise at Newcastle United transfer target, Christian Pulisic, staying at Chelsea this summer.

The USA international was the subject of heavy interest when the 2022 summer transfer was opened, but instead, he stayed at Chelsea, where his game time has been limited in recent times.

Newcastle were knocking on the player’s door, there were even suggestions that on transfer deadline day they tried to sign the 23-year-old.

Now, Pulisic’s game time was restricted under Thomas Tuchel, who has since been sacked, but could all of that now change with Graham Potter in the Stamford Bridge hot seat?

Pulisic will be hoping so because he needs those regular minutes in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup, where he is going to be a key player for the US national men’s team.

Nonetheless, when Henry spoke about Pulisic’s future, this is what he had to say about the Newcastle target not making a move this summer, as he told CBS Sports (06/09/22 at 7:40 pm).

“I think by now we would have known if he could play,” said Henry. “He has been at Chelsea for a very long time.

“I thought Pulisic was going to leave. I think it was time for him to leave. But he didn’t. It’s over. That’s going to be the case up until the World Cup.

“He has to find a way to play. Sterling is in front of him. They also have Aubameyang. But I thought he was going to leave.”

CAN POTTER BRING THE BEST OUT OF PULISIC?

The all-action winger was signed up by Chelsea in 2019 when they paid Borussia Dortmund £58 million for the player (BBC Sport).

Despite such a big fee being put on the table for the player, he still hasn’t managed to become a regular during his time at the club.

A move was needed because that fresh start, new environment and different tactics would have probably worked in his favour.

Instead, Pulisic will now be hoping his new manager takes a liking to him because if he doesn’t, then his career at Chelsea will be well and truly over.
