Leeds United wanted Bamba Dieng and the Marseille forward has now rejected a move to join Belgian side Royal Antwerp.
The Whites simply had to bring in attacking reinforcements before the deadline having struggled on that front earlier in the summer.
Charles De Ketelaere and Arnaud Kalimuendo were both wanted but joined AC Milan and Rennes respectively.
Rodrigo’s injury and Daniel James’ loan move to Fulham made attacking additions a priority, but it became something of a drama…
Leeds United wanted Bamba Dieng
Reports on deadline day suggested that Marseille forward Bamba Dieng was heading for Leeds United.
A deal of £10million had been agreed with Marseille and Leeds were expecting Dieng to fly in and complete his move.
However, Nice made a bid to hijack Leeds and Dieng, sat an airport weighing up his future, picked the French club over the Whites.
The deal collapsed and Leeds were left furious, but there was another twist to come as Dieng failed a medical with Nice.
Leeds signed Wilfried Gnonto from Zurich instead, but what next for Dieng?
Well, it’s not exactly good news for him at Marseille.
Dieng has been left out of Marseille’s Champions League squad and now cannot be registered until January, meaning he won’t be playing on Europe’s biggest stage.
L’Equipe even add that Dieng has now received another offer with Belgian side Royal Antwerp keen to sign him.
Belgium’s transfer deadline isn’t until Tuesday, meaning there was still a chance for Dieng to move there.
It’s claimed that Royal Antwerp offered regular playing time and a ‘substantial salary’ but Dieng rejected them.
Dieng seemingly won’t play much under Igor Tudor and now risks being in the shadows at Marseille – all whilst Leeds moved on to sign a wonderkid in Gnonto.
Leeds won’t have liked the drama, but they will certainly like how things have panned out now.
