Leeds United Football Club wanted Cody Gakpo but PSV Eindhoven have now refused to sell the winger ahead of tonight’s transfer deadline.
The Whites are in the market for attacking additions for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, Leeds needed another striker anyway but their search for attacking reinforcements has only heightened with Rodrigo now injured.
Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur are chasing a late deal for Daniel James, meaning Leeds may need to replace the Welshman.
Leeds United wanted Cody Gakpo
Hwang Hee-chan is one name in the mix but Leeds were desperate to secure a big signature by landing PSV Eindhoven ace Cody Gakpo.
Reports earlier this week suggested that Leeds were showing a strong interest in Gakpo, rivalling Everton and Southampton.
The Athletic now report that Leeds director of football Victor Orta travelled to the Netherlands last night to try and wrap up a deal.
However, PSV have had a change of heart and are now choosing not to sell Gakpo before the deadline.
PSV now hope to give Gakpo a new contract and keep him in Eindhoven for years to come.
Sky Sports add that Orta is now heading back to England this morning without an agreement in place, seemingly signalling the end of Leeds’ pursuit.
What a huge blow this is for Leeds.
Gakpo racked up 21 goals and 14 assists last season and has been in ridiculous form in the early weeks of this season, recording seven goals and six assists in nine games.
The Dutchman is big and strong at 6ft 2in tall, but quick and a threat both out wide and through the middle.
Gakpo is a major talent and could have provided the quality Leeds are seeking in the final third, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Orta must now chase other targets for Leeds in the final hours of the window, but he will do well to find a target as talented as Gakpo.
