Everton and Leeds United want Cody Gakpo and PSV Eindhoven are expecting some big offers for the winger before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Gakpo was simply outstanding last season, bagging 21 goals and 15 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

The 23-year-old has started this season in similar form, already notching four goals and six assists in eight games.

Gakpo seems ready for a new challenge outside of the Netherlands and there appears to be a scramble for his signature.

Everton and Leeds United want Cody Gakpo

The Telegraph report that Southampton have failed with a bid worth around £21.4million for Gakpo.

It’s added that Leeds United and Everton are now pushing to sign Gakpo – and PSV are expecting a real fight.

The report claims that PSV are now expecting ‘further, higher offers’ from other clubs in the race.

PSV want around €45million (£39million), so it’s now over to Everton, Leeds and other clubs to decide whether to make a bid.

Southampton being round £18million away from the asking price for Gakpo means they have a lot of ground to make up.

The door is therefore open for Everton or Leeds to swoop in – and we would back Leeds as the more likely destination.

Everton are pushing to sign Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze so adding Gakpo on top of him would be a huge surprise.

Leeds on the other hand are receiving major interest in winger Daniel James, with Tottenham Hotspur keen on signing the Welshman.

If James leaves, Leeds will surely need another winger to support Jack Harrison and Luis Sinisterra, with Gakpo potentially fitting the bill.

£39million would be a massive outlay for the Whites though, and far exceeding any fee they could receive for James on deadline day.

Other Premier League clubs are surely paying close attention to Gakpo’s situation, with his goalscoring form making him a dangerous threat for any side in the final third.
