Lee Hendrie has urged Aston Villa to secure a deadline day transfer of Newcastle United target, Conor Gallagher, from Chelsea, as he told Sky Sports News (01/08/22 at 2:45 pm).

Steven Gerrard watched his Villa team suffer a fourth defeat of the new Premier League season on Wednesday night and Gallagher thinks Chelsea’s academy star ‘fits the bill’ for his former side.

There has been strong interest in Gallagher this summer, with Newcastle, Villa and West Ham among the clubs keen on the £35 million-rated player.

Villa probably need the player more than anyone else because they are seriously struggling this season, especially in the middle of the park.

One of the top transfer talking points of deadline day has been Douglas Luiz possibly going to Arsenal, if Gerrard loses him, then it’s a big blow.

With versatile Belgium international Leander Dendoncker closing in on a move to B6 from Wolves, Hendrie also wants Gallagher added to the club’s midfield ranks.

“Personally, I would have liked to have seen them go for a midfielder like Conor Gallagher,” said Hendrie. “He has bags of energy.

“I think he would fit the bill at Aston Villa. I know it’s not easy to prime him away from Chelsea.”

GALLAGHER WOULD BE PERFECT FOR VILLA

Gerrard is in a spot of bother and he might not even be able to develop the players he brings in on deadline day because he might not be in a job in a few months.

But a player like Gallagher would be ideal as a number eight and someone who would push ahead of Jacob Ramsey and John McGinn in midfield, right now and work well alongside Douglas Luiz.

Ramsey is still young and developing, but McGinn has hit a brick wall and is unrecognisable from that free spirit player that was performing so well under Dean Smith.

But Chelsea probably wouldn’t be willing to sell because Thomas Tuchel has midfield issues of his own.
