Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly launched a surprise bid to sign Inter Milan defender Robin Gosens, who only joined the Serie A side in January after snubbing a move to Newcastle United in the same window.
According to Sport1, the Bundesliga side have launched a loan offer with an obligation to buy clause totalling at €27m (£23m), with Inter open to selling Gosens just six months after the Germany international joined the Nerazzurri from Atalanta in the January transfer window.
Gosens has been one of the best fullbacks in Serie A in recent years, yet the 28-year-old’s move to Inter has been nothing short of underwhelming, with the defender making just 13 appearances in all competitions for Simone Inzaghi’s side as injuries and a lack a form have played a part in the German’s time at the San Siro.
And now, Leverkusen are looking to sign the left-wingback with the Bundesliga side launching a shock loan-to-buy offer for Gosens, with Inter believed to be open to the proposal in the final days of the summer transfer window, much to the dismay of Newcastle.
The Magpies were reportedly very interested in signing Gosens in January, yet with Eddie Howe’s side, at the time, still one of the favourites to go down, the German never made the move to St. James Park, with the Toon instead signing Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa in what was to be one of the shrewdest deals of the January window.
Indeed, Newcastle are now in an incredibly exciting position after their sensational second half of the season last term and their great start to the new campaign this term, and for Gosens, the German might now be regretting not signing for the northeast side in January ahead of a potential loan move to Leverkusen.
Newcastle will be fuming if Leverkusen sign Gosens

The January transfer window was a wild time to be a Newcastle supporter with the Magpies seemingly linked with everyone and everything in PIF’s first transfer period as owners of the club, and Gosens was very much a player the Toon wanted to sign, yet whilst it all eventually worked out with Targett, Howe will be feeling stung by this news from Leverkusen.
After all, Newcastle battled hard with Inter to sign Gosens, and for the Serie A side to dumb the defender just six months later is a big kick in the teeth for the Premier League side, with the German’s move to Leverkusen no doubt set to leave some in Tyneside fuming.
