Leeds United wanted Mergim Berisha but the Fenerbahce striker could now head to Stuttgart to replace Wolves-bound Sasa Kalajdzic.
The Whites have been chasing a striker this summer but have hit dead ends in their pursuit.
Charles De Ketelaere was the top target but he joined AC Milan instead.
Attention turned to Arnaud Kalimuendo, but he again slipped through the net with a move to Rennes.
It’s gone a little quiet on the striker front now and Leeds may end the window without a new forward unless something changes quickly.
Leeds United wanted Mergim Berisha
There was another name in the mix earlier in the window though as Leeds were heavily linked with Fenerbahce hitman Mergim Berisha.
Reports in Turkey suggested back in July that Leeds were just £2.5million away from signing Berisha; they had offered around £1.7million whilst Fenerbahce wanted £4.25million.
Fenerbahce only signed Berisha last summer but already want to sell in order to trim the number of foreign players in their squad.
A move to Leeds would have made some sense given that Berisha knows boss Jesse Marsch well.
The pair worked together at Red Bull Salzburg and Berisha hit 22 goals in his final season under Marsch in Austria.
The German hitman moved on to Fenerbahce and scored seven times in 31 games last season.
Berisha could have given Leeds another attacking option off the bench but he could now be heading elsewhere.
Kicker report that Stuttgart are pushing to sign Berisha as their new centre forward.
Stuttgart are sadly selling star striker Sasa Kalajdzic to Wolverhampton Wanderers and really need to replace the Austrian.
Berisha is now being primed to replace Kalajdzic, meaning move to Leeds now looks somewhat unlikely.
There is still time for Leeds to get back into this race ahead of the deadline, but Stuttgart seems to be Berisha’s most likely destination.
