Aston Villa are closing in on Ismaila Sarr with the Watford winger now nearing a £25million move back to the Premier League.

Villa have endured a difficult start to the season under Steven Gerrard.

Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Crystal Palace made it two defeats in three to start the campaign, and the pressure is building on Gerrard.

New signings will be needed at Villa Park and it looks like Gerrard is closing in on a major addition to his attacking options.

Aston Villa are closing in on Ismaila Sarr

Foot Mercato report that an agreement has been reached between Watford and Villa for the transfer of winger Ismaila Sarr.

It’s stated that the deal is worth around €28million (£24million), with Villa seemingly set to win the race.

Sky Sports add that the deal will be around £25million plus add-ons as Sarr prepares to make the move to Villa Park.

Sarr, 24, didn’t play for Watford against Preston North End on Saturday, but did travel with the Hornets squad.

The Senegal winger was out through injury but now looks set to leave Vicarage Road.

Sarr notched five goals and two assists in 22 Premier League games last season and has been hailed as ‘frightening’ by ex-Watford teammate Ben Foster.

Leeds United were also interested in signing Sarr but that seemingly hinged on players leaving Elland Road, which hasn’t happened yet.

Villa have now been able to swoop in, but whether this is the signing Gerrard really needs is another matter.

Gerrard is already having to figure out how to juggle the likes of Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia, Philippe Coutinho and Leon Bailey in the final third.

Adding another attacker when Villa could really do with a midfielder seems a curious choice, and may not fill Bailey with too much confidence after his assist against Palace on Saturday.
