Newcastle United considered signing Yann Sommer and the Swiss goalkeeper could now end up signing for Manchester United this summer.

The Magpies went into the summer window knowing they wanted to sign a new goalkeeper.

Martin Dubravka has been a solid stopper for years but Karl Darlow was mere backup and Freddie Woodman was offloaded to Preston North End.

A number of stoppers were linked with Newcastle during this summer window and one of them could now end up making a big move to Manchester United.

When it became clear that Newcastle wouldn’t be signing Dean Henderson from Manchester United, they seemed to narrow their search to two goalkeepers.

One of them was Nick Pope, the main Newcastle ended up signing from Burnley.

Pope joined Newcastle in June and has already kept two clean sheets in a Magpies shirt, meaning he looks like a solid addition already.

The other goalkeeper heavily linked just a couple of weeks before Pope’s arrival was Yann Sommer.

TalkSPORT reported that Newcastle were eyeing up a deal to sign Sommer with Eddie Howe keen to land a ball-playing goalkeeper.

Sommer is outstanding in that regard but Newcastle instead chose to sign a proven Premier League stopper in Pope, even though he will need to develop his game in terms of playing from the back.

Newcastle’s choice was Pope, but they could now see Sommer make a Premier League move anyway.

Sky Sports report that Manchester United fancy signing Sommer as competition for David De Gea.

The 33-year-old would want to be first-choice though, meaning United may not find this deal easy.

De Gea has shown that he just isn’t good enough to play as a ball-playing goalkeeper, whereas Sommer has proven himself in that regard for club and country.

The Swiss international has just one year left on his Gladbach deal and whilst Newcastle overlooked him, United may well push for his signature.

Manchester United and Newcastle United meet in October, meaning Sommer may well have a chance to show Newcastle his qualities first-hand.
