According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United have had a £17.5m offer rejected for Watford’s Joao Pedro.
It’s no secret that Newcastle United are in the market for a young striker this summer. They went all-out for Hugo Ekitike before his move to PSG, while they have also been linked to the likes of Alexander Isak and Bamba Dieng lately.
However, unfortunately for the Magpies, all of their pursuits to date have failed, and they’re also seemingly heading down a dead end with this one.
Indeed, Watford have repelled any and all interest in Pedro so far, despite the likes of Leeds and West Ham being keen, and their current stance is that he’s not for sale.
Of course, money talks, but the Hornets are in a position of power here as Pedro’s contract isn’t up anytime soon and the club have just received £20m for Emmanuel Dennis from Nottingham Forest.
To be fair, we can understand why Watford don’t want to sell Pedro. The Brazilian has the potential to be one of the very best players in the Championship this season, and after such a bright start, the Hertfordshire side will be targeting an immediate return to the Premier League.
Promotion to the top-flight will be worth more to Watford than any bid they’re likely to receive for their star striker, and while Newcastle may be the richest club in the world, they’re still not the type of team that will overspend on any player.
Newcastle may have to once again go back to the drawing board in their pursuit of a new striker, because it looks as though the ‘brilliant’ striker will be staying at Watford for the remainder of this season at least.
