Gabriel Jesus stole the headlines for Arsenal on Saturday.

And with good reason.

The Brazilian scored two and set up the other two goals in Arsenal’s 4-2 victory at home to Leicester City, capping a remarkable home debut for the former Manchester City hitman.

However, Gabriel Martinelli also demonstrated what a gem he is for the Gunners – and how iconic he can be in the future.

Even when he wasn’t playing regularly, the Brazil international was a massive fan favourite among the Emirates Stadium faithful for his capacity to make things happen in electrifying circumstances, a little like Thierry Henry could.

Of course, Martinelli has a long way to go before he’s anywhere near Henry’s level but, at 20 years old, he’s certainly got the speed, agility and industry to become an icon for the North London outfit.

One moment in the first half epitomised the bargain addition from 2019, when he treated Wesley Fofana – who could be joining Chelsea in a £80 million deal – like a Sunday league footballer, knocking the ball past him with ease.

Martinelli remains raw in some parts of his game, but this is a player who, if fine-tuned, could be a devastating player for Arsenal down the years.

Well, providing they keep him.

Remember, the youngster is only contracted to the club until 2024 and if Mikel Arteta doesn’t secure Champions League qualification this season, next summer we’re looking at a transfer saga and probable exit.

But if Arsenal finish in the top four and secure his future, well it’s such an exciting proposition.

Edu has made quite a few very decent signings for Arsenal, but signing this kid, for a paltry £6 million, won’t be beaten.
