Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard is not keen on a £12 million move to Premier League newcomers Fulham, according to the Daily Mail, preferring to leave the King Power Stadium on loan instead.
With the Qatar World Cup now just three-and-a-bit months away, this could become a bit of trend during the final few weeks of the window; Out-of-favour players leaving on loan in order to boost their prospects of first-team football and, thus, their chances of securing a seat on the plane.
Conor Coady has already joined Everton on a temporary deal after falling behind Max Kilman and Nathan Collins in the Wolves pecking order. Mateusz Klich could leave Leeds United on a short-term basis too.
And while Jannik Vestergaard is reluctant to give up on his Leicester career just one year after joining from Southampton – turning down a £12 million move to Craven Cottage – the opportunity to leave on loan is one he’d consider ahead of Denmark’s World Cup opener against Tunisia on November 25th.
Fulham bid for Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard
The problem is, Leicester do not share Vestergaard’s enthusiasm for a loan deal. The Foxes, according to The Mail, would prefer to sell. Leicester must raise funds via player sales before they can bring in new players, with Brendan Rodgers still awaiting his first summer addition.
But offers for the likes of Ayoze Perez, Dennis Praet and Caglar Soyuncu are hardly flooding in. Kasper Schmeichel, a £900,000 signing for Nice, is the only first-team departure since the end of last season.
And it seems unlikely that Fulham will make a new attempt for Vestergaard between now and September. Shane Duffy arrived on loan from Brighton on Friday. Issa Diop is on his way from West Ham United too, the Hammers having accepted Fulham’s £15 million bid (Standard).
30-year-old Vestergaard started just six games during a miserable debut season at the King Power. A man who thrived at Southampton simply looks ill-suited to Rodgers’ front-foot approach; His lack of mobility sticking out like the proverbial sore thumb.
