Leicester City missed out on £21 million Nico Schotterbeck and could sell Premier League stalwarts Jannik Vestergaard, Ayoze Perez and Caglar Soyuncu to raise funds for new signings, according to The Athletic.
The phrase ‘end of an era’ comes to mind.
Sunday’s final day clash with Southampton will represent the final outing at the King Power Stadium for many members of Brendan Rodgers’ squad; A side badly in need of some fresh blood and new investment.
With debts exceeding £250 million, Leicester will have to sell before they can buy however.
And that presents a problem for Rodgers, a coach who has made no secret of his desire to knock down a decaying dynasty and build a new one out of the rubble.
Leicester City’s transfer problems
The Athletic believe that a left-sided centre-back, a pair of central midfielders and a right-winger are top priorities heading into the summer.
It remains to be seen whether the sale of players such as Hamza Choudhury and Ayoze Perez will be sufficient to boost the club’s coffers.
Both players are entering the final 12 months of their deals. As are Papy Mendy and the out-of-sorts Soyuncu, two other players who’s futures remain uncertain.
The report suggests that Vestergaard – a man who appears to fit in about as well as a jazz flute player joining the ranks of Megadeath – could also be on his way just one year after arriving from Southampton for £15 million.

As Tottenham and Newcastle United have discovered, left-sided central defenders do not grow on trees.
Leicester were keen on Germany international Schlotterbeck but he is now out of their reach, having sealed a £21 million move from Freiburg to Borussia Dortmund.

Sven Botman, another player who has been linked with the 2021 FA Cup winners in the recent past, is expected to join Serie A champions-in-waiting AC Milan.
Ibrahim Sangare, PSV’s Ivorian colossus, would add some steel and strength to the heart of Rodgers’ midfield. Red Bull Salzburg’s Chukwubuike Junior Adamu, meanwhile, could fill a void on the right-hand side.
