Espanyol are yet to receive any offers for Adria Pedrosa amid links with Premier League duo Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion, the La Liga club’s CEO Mao Ye tells La Grada.

The last time Brighton signed an exciting young full-back from Spain’s top flight, they were basking in the glory of a near-£50 million profit less than 12 months later.

Whatever you think about the frankly obscene fee Chelsea are investing in the poodle-haired Marc Cucurella, you cannot argue with Brighton’s well-deserved reputation as one of the most intelligent recruiters in all of English football.

And Pedrosa, a 24-year-old former Spain U21 international, would be, in many ways, a typical Brighton signing. Young, hungry, affordable and brimming with re-sale potential.

Could Adria Pedrosa replace Chelsea’s £62m man Marc Cucurella?

According to Barcelona-based publication Mundo Deportivo, The Seagulls have entered talks with Pedrosa’s camp. Newcastle United are interested too.

Pedrosa has less than a year left on his Espanyol contract. And, while there is optimism over an extension, rising interest from the Premier League will set Periquitos pulses racing.

The La Liga outfit are yet to receive an offer for a player dubbed ‘one of the fastest full-backs in Europe’. That could soon change, however, as the window enters its final stretch.

“No (we have not had any bids for Pedrosa),” explains Mao Ye. “We have always talked about renewal with his agents.”

According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Betis are keeping tabs on Pedrosa too. Manuel Pellegrini were in the market for a new left-sided defender when Alex Moreno looked set to complete a £9 million move to Nottingham Forest.

“There is great harmony and we continue working,” Espanyol’s sporting director Domingo Catoira said recently, via Pericos

“I am confident (that Pedrosa will sign a new contract).”

Newcastle remain in the market for a versatile, left-sided player capable of thriving in a four or three-man backline. Pedrosa fits the bill, and would come a lot cheaper than the likes of Leeds United’s Jack Harrison.
