Burnley may know how Manchester City are feeling today. And that’s not a sentence you’ll read too often this summer. But they, like Pep Guardiola and co, know what it’s like to see Marc Cucurella slip through your fingers.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are set to do what Chelsea tend to do; Snatch a top target from under the noses of a major Premier League rival. It may not be Willian 2.0, or a repeat of that John Obi Mikel saga, but City may be left with a face redder than their neighbour’s shirts if Marc Cucurella ends up in the deep-blue hue of Chelsea instead.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are now in ‘advanced talks’ to sign the Brighton and Hove Albion left-back for a colossal £50 million.
This comes just three days after Cucurella handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a move to an Etihad Stadium outfit who, almost throughout the entirety of Pep Guardiola’s trophy-laden tenure, have had to do without a top-class left-back for a variety of reasons.
Chelsea close in on Man City target Marc Cucurella
Cucurella has come a long way since Burnley submitted a £10 million bid for the then-Barcelona youngster back in 2019 (Marca). The poodle-haired Spaniard was an integral part of the Getafe side who reached the Europa League round-of-16, before taking his already swashbuckling game to an all-new level at the Amex.
“There were people who said I couldn’t play as a full-back because I couldn’t defend,” Cucurella told Marca recently; His words as bullish and combative as his on-pitch style.
“But now I’m proving I can even play as a centre-back in a back three.”
“His contribution has been brilliant,” adds Brighton boss Graham Potter, Cucurella the latest in a long line of hungry young players who have come on leaps and bounds under his stewardship.
“On and off the pitch. The way he plays the game is so refreshing. He brings energy to the team.”
With Chelsea closing in, it seems Cucurella will soon be bringing £50 million to Brighton too.
