What an early statement from Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Antonio Conte’s outfit came from a goal down in North London to hammer Southampton 4-1 on their first Premier League encounter of the campaign.

Despite enjoying a brilliant transfer window thus far, none of their pre-season additions started against the Saints.

At £60 million [Sky Sports], no Tottenham player cost more than Richarlison this summer but the Brazilian was suspended for this one following a flare-related incident while playing for Everton toward the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Here’s how the former Toffee and Watford winger reacted to the victory on Twitter:

It’s pretty ominous for Spurs’ Premier League rivals, this result.

That’s because, as mentioned, none of their new signings played a massive role in the victory.

Ivan Perisic came on midway through the second half, with Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet also making late cameos.

However, Conte’s troops scored all four goals before a single substitution was made.

Southampton are tipped to struggle this season but, even still, this was a fantastic opening-weekend statement from a Lilywhites side who could be dark horses for the title.

Of course, nobody will judge them by whether or not Conte delivers a Premier League crown – his second, having done so with Chelsea earlier in his career – but they’re looking excellent already, it has to be said.
