Romano claims forward is in talks to become free agent, despite claims Spurs will offer £14.5m

Memphis Depay could now leave Barcelona for nothing amid links over a potential move to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Just over a year ago, Memphis was one of the most in-demand free agents on the market as he left Lyon.

Memphis had racked up 76 goals in 178 games for Lyon, rebuilding his reputation having struggled in England at Manchester United.

The Dutchman was snapped up by Barcelona as Ronald Koeman pounced – but the move hasn’t really worked out as planned.

Memphis Depay could now leave Barcelona

Memphis did score 13 goals in 38 appearances for Barcelona last season but his time at the Camp Nou may be coming to an end.

Barca may have expected more from Memphis but the door to first-team action appears to be closed.

Barcelona now have Ansu Fatu, Ousmane Dembele, Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the final third, with Memphis seemingly the odd man out.

That means Memphis has been heavily linked with a move away and Tottenham Hotspur have been in the mix according to reports.

SPORT reported in July that Tottenham had indicated that they were willing to pay £14.5million to sign Memphis.

Barcelona wanted £17million but Tottenham were taking steps towards a deal for the 28-year-old.

There now appears to be a strange turn of events though, as Fabrizio Romano claims that Memphis could now leave Barcelona for nothing.

Romano has taken to Twitter to report that Depay’s representation are in talks with Barcelona to terminate his contract and allow him to become a free agent.

Romano claims there is just no way for Barcelona to bring in €20million and Memphis will now push to leave the Camp Nou for free.

This seems strange; Barcelona may not land €20million but they could surely bring in some form of cash for the Dutchman.

This would suggest to us that Tottenham didn’t have £14.5million on the table after all, but they may well be interested in Memphis if he does become a free agent this summer.
