Tottenham want Memphis Depay but are only willing to pay €17million (£14.5million) to sign the Barcelona attacker this summer.

Barcelona’s spending spree continues to confuse and confound as they keep making big signings.

Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen are in as free agents but Barca have now struck deals for Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

How do they register these players? How do they afford to pay the fees and wages involved? Few really seem sure at the moment with Barca still going for big names.

Surely there will be some exits soon and whilst Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United is the hot topic, there could be another Dutchman heading for England.

Catalan newspaper SPORT continue to claim that Tottenham want to sign Memphis this summer.

SPORT claimed on Saturday that Tottenham had been putting in the most effort in the race to sign Memphis.

Now they have an update, claiming that Tottenham really do want Memphis but are only looking to pay €17million (£14.5million).

That’s short of the €20million (£17million) Barcelona are seeking, but are they really in a position to say no?

Memphis has one year left on his Barca deal and with money in short supply, they need to sell.

It’s stated that Tottenham first asked about Memphis during talks for defender Clement Lenglet, who joined Spurs earlier this month.

A deal couldn’t be done then but Tottenham haven’t given up and allegedly still want to sign Memphis, with a step towards a deal taken ‘in the last few hours’ according to SPORT’s latest update.

Memphis is understood to be reluctant to move to the Premier League and may wait on Tottenham’s offer yet.

The Dutch international signed for Manchester United in 2015 but scored just twice in 33 Premier League outings before joining Lyon, even though Jose Mourinho branded him ‘fantastic’.

76 goals in 178 games over in France wasn’t a bad record and Memphis managed 13 goals in 38 Barcelona outings last season.

A versatile forward who can play up front, out wide or behind a striker, Memphis could provide quality but isn’t that why Tottenham signed Richarlison?

Add in Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski and it’s just hard to see where Memphis would fit in unless Antonio Conte wants truly outstanding competition for places.
