Calvin Bassey was red-carded for Ajax on Saturday evening as the recent Arsenal target endured a dismal debut in Amsterdam.

Ajax hosted PSV Eindhoven on Saturday as the two old rivals battled for the Johan Cruijff Schaal; effectively the Community Shield in the Netherlands.

Ajax went ahead through new signing Steven Bergwijn before Guus Til scored two headers for PSV.

Antony levelled it up for Ajax but the goals kept coming with Cody Gakpo scoring for PSV and Til completing his hat-trick.

Mohammed Kudus fired in a superb goal for Ajax but things turned even worse for the hosts.

New signing Bassey was given his marching orders with a straight red card after a VAR check.

Xavi Simons then swooped in to make it 5-3 for PSV, putting the seal on a crazy game.

This was a nightmare start for Bassey, who was making his competitive debut for Ajax having arrived from Rangers FC.

Bassey was seen as the ideal replacement for Lisandro Martinez, who left Ajax for Manchester United this summer.

Martinez and Bassey can both play at centre back or left back, with left-sided defenders in high demand right now.

Bassey cost Ajax around £23million after shining at Rangers, and the Dutch giants have to fight off major competition.

Reports from The Secret Scout earlier this month suggested that Arsenal and Manchester United were both fighting to sign Bassey.

Arsenal and United were battling for Martinez with Bassey seemingly viewed as the ideal alternative by all clubs.

Arsenal missed out on Martinez but signed Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City, and he has certainly made a better impact than Bassey in his early weeks.

Bassey will surely have a bright future at Ajax but this was a night to forget for the former Leicester City man.

Bassey was brought on for fellow new signing Owen Wijndal on 62 minutes but was sent off for a lunge just 14 minutes later.

The Nigerian will hope to bounce back from this blow quickly, with Ajax taking on Fortuna Sittard in their Eredivisie opener next weekend.
