West Ham have signed Gianluca Scamacca but had to fend off a last-gasp hijack attempt from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

After securing Nayef Aguerd, Alphonse Areola and Flynn Downes, West Ham made their next priority abundantly clear; it was time for attackers.

A deal for Armando Broja looked close last week but West Ham pivoted away from the Chelsea man and instead focused on Scamacca.

Securing one of Serie A’s top strikers was never going to be easy, but the Hammers managed to pull off a deal on Tuesday night.

West Ham have signed Gianluca Scamacca

West Ham announced Scamacca’s arrival in less-than-ideal circumstances; they misspelled his name in their announcement video.

Still, nothing will really dull the excitement of West Ham fans, who will be excited to see Scamacca in action.

The 6ft 5in striker is a huge presence but has also shown real ability with the ball at his feet and even scoring from range.

16 goals in 36 league games last season – of which only 25 were starts – showcased the kind of ability Scamacca possesses.

As you can well imagine though, West Ham were far from the only team interested in signing Scamacca.

Arsenal had a look earlier in the window before signing Gabriel Jesus, whilst Paris Saint-Germain were very keen.

Get French Football News reported in June that Scamacca had agreed terms with PSG and the Ligue 1 giants were ready to pay big money.

West Ham were then able to swoop in and secure Scamacca, but not before fending off one last push from PSG.

Sky Sports claim that PSG made a last-gasp bid to hijack Scamacca’s move to West Ham, but he and his representatives made it clear that they had already given their word to the Hammers.

Scamacca could have been lining up with Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe last season, but he passed up that chance in favour of West Ham.

That’s a major win for West Ham, and whilst Scamacca must now do the business on the pitch, his commitment to getting a deal done with the Hammers is a great start to life in East London.
