Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil admits he’d love to see Nathan Broadhead return to the Championship newcomers from Premier League outfit Everton, speaking to the Sunderland Chronicle.

The Toffees certainly could have done with a centre-forward boasting Broadhead’s goal-to-minute ratio as they battled against the drop in 2021/22.

The former Wales U21 international scored 13 goals in 27 games on loan in the North East. One of those even came against top-flight Arsenal in the EFL Cup quarter-finals; A sublime little dink that Richarlison would have been proud to call his own.

Will Everton striker Nathan Broadhead return to Sunderland?

Broadhead’s future at club level remains uncertain, however, ahead of Sunderland’s league opener against Coventry City this weekend. According to the Northern Echo, talks between Everton and the Black Cats have hit an ‘impasse’.

Local lad Neil is not giving up hope of seeing Broadhead return to Wearside however.

“I mean, personally, I hope so,” the 20-year-old admits.

“I haven’t spoken to him in a while (so) I don’t know. We’ll see what happens and see if he wants to come back or not.”

At 24, Broadhead seemed to have missed the boat at Everton. But his one-in-two ratio last term – and the lack of forward options at Goodison Park – could maybe see the Bangor-born poacher handed the most unexpected of clean slates at his parent club.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are now chasing another Everton-owned striker in Ellis Simms.

Simms, having shone on loan at Blackpool and Hearts in the past, would become the latest eye-catching arrival in an impressive summer window for Sunderland. Alex Neil’s side have already signed Dan Ballard and Aji Alese from Arsenal and West Ham respectively.

Patrick Roberts has also been retained.

“Pat has a lot of experience from his career,” Neil adds. “I think it was important to get that core group of players together that got us promoted. A few additions on the side with Dan (Ballard) and Aji (Alese).

“They’ve been looking good and settling in.”
